VISIT US
Located in the eastern Himalayas and bordered by China in the north and India in the east, west
and south, Bhutan is a mountainous, land-locked country. The population of around 634,982 is still
mostly engaged in subsistence farming. Bhutan opened up to the outside world only in 1974 and,
keen to safeguard an ancient and rich cultural heritage, Bhutan adopted a cautious tourism policy
right from the start, to avoid the negative impact that uncontrolled mass tourism could have in
such a small and sparsely populated country. Bhutan has remained a country where age old customs and traditions are still part of the everyday lives of the people even while modernization, development and the strains of global influence are felt more and more.
Our homeland has great scenic beauty and a rich and vibrant culture in which traditional beliefs and practices still play a major role in the lives of one and all. The countryside is lushly forested, the air is clean and clear, and a visit to Bhutan is a refreshing and invigorating experience, offering tranquility and close intimacy with nature.
